Introductory Course

This three-day course provides an overview of the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) 4th Edition curriculum and serves as the prerequisite for WRS Level I Certification. Participants will explore how WRS supports phonemic awareness, word identification, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through an integrated study of phonology, morphology, and orthography.

Level 1 Certification

The WRS Level I Certification Program prepares teachers to effectively implement WRS Steps 1–6. This yearlong program deepens teacher content knowledge while providing supervised, practical experience applying WRS strategies in real classrooms. Completion leads to eligibility for the Wilson® Dyslexia Practitioner (W.D.P.) credential.

Course details

Wilson Reading System® Introductory Course

This course provides participants with an overview of the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) 4th Edition curriculum and serves as the prerequisite for WRS Level I Certification.

Over three consecutive days (16.5 hours), this course examines how WRS addresses the teaching of phonemic awareness, word identification, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through an integrated study of phonology, morphology, and orthography with students in grade two and above with persistent phonological coding deficits.

Course Fee: $710

Wilson Reading System® Level 1 Certification

The Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Level I Certification is recognized as an IDA AccreditationPlus program. It is designed to prepare teachers to effectively implement WRS Steps 1–6 with students who are reading and spelling below grade level, as well as those diagnosed with a language-based learning disability, such as dyslexia.

This 12-month course includes a practicum and requires completion of the WRS Introductory Course as a prerequisite.

Course Fee: $2,950

Setting the Foundation for Success

Based on the Orton-Gillingham principles and current research on phonological coding, Wilson® provides both the foundations of reading and the foundations of writing:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Decoding as part of word study
  • High frequency words
  • Spelling and proofreading
  • Vocabulary
  • Fluency and oral expression
  • Morphology: the study of word elements (prefixes, suffixes, Latin base elements)
  • Comprehension (constructing a cohesive mental model for text)
