Learning Specialist Ms. Zinkewich Shares Some Tips On Creating Routines

Now that we're finally settled into a new school year, it's important to use this time to create routines for your children which will benefit them (and you!) for the rest of the school year!

Try to find a quiet, low-traffic area in your house to use as a "homework zone."
Often students might prefer to do their homework in the living room or in their bedrooms, but as those locations are primarily used for relaxing, it can be difficult to stay focused on work.

Once you've found your space, try to set a standard homework time for every night. I know that this can be difficult with the multitude of activities we're all involved in, but creating the routine of a set time for school work will help get your children into the "homework frame of mind."

If your child doesn't have homework one night, have them use that scheduled time for independent reading, group discussion, or research on a topic they are interested in. Having consistent and clear expectations for this time, no matter what, will help you to avoid wasted time or disagreements about work vs. play.

Finally, have your child prepare their backpack and gym bag before they go to sleep. This will help the mornings go a bit more smoothly and can also serve as a final "check" to make sure that all assignments are complete!
