Student Spotlight: Jack Richardson
Freshman Runs His Own Lawncare Business

At the age of 10, Jack Richardson offered to mow his family's lawn for $15, once a week. Jack really enjoyed mowing his lawn because he found it relaxing. He was able to sit back, relax and listen to music on his ride-on mower.
He enjoyed this hobby so much that last May, he decided that he wanted to start his own landscaping business, which he called Jack’s Lawn Care.
The first job he had was for a contractor who was building a house next door. Jack emailed the contractor to see if he would be interested in Jack’s Lawn Care, and he took Jack up on his offer.
Jack’s Lawn Care also does leaf clean-up and weeding. He runs his business through the spring, summer and fall. He charges $15 an hour for leaf clean-up and weeding. However, when it comes to mowing, the amount of money the customer pays him depends on the size of their lawn.
A normal job for the freshman, which includes weeding, leaf clean-up and mowing, takes approximately 2 to 4 hours to complete.
Currently Jack landscapes in his neighborhood, but he hopes that when he learns to drive, he will be able to pursue this job elsewhere.
“Driving is the only thing holding me back,” he said.
Someday, Jack would like to attend trade school for horticulture, landscaping, and turf management. Jack would like to receive a horticulture degree, which would allow him to start his own landscaping business. He is going to continue to work hard and see where this business will lead him.
“Jack Richardson is one of the bright young minds of the ninth grade,” said History teacher Mr. Laughead. “He is a dedicated student of history AND he plays guitar. These two traits will take him far in life. I am confident Jack will learn a lot about work ethic and glean a lot from his lawn care service.
“In fact,” Mr. Laughead added, “I’d like to hire him to tackle my jungle of a backyard once the weather gets warm.”
