If you want to learn Spanish, watch a Spanish TV show, and listen to Spanish music, then join the school’s new Spanish Club. They meet weekly, after school, on Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m., and both Middle School and Upper School students are welcome.
“I wanted to give students who don’t take Spanish the opportunity to learn some!” new Spanish teacher Mrs. Karabell said when asked why she created the club.
When the club first started mid-winter, four students initially attended; however, ten have shown interest. The club had only met twice as of mid-February, but Mrs. Karabell hopes it grows.
“The cool thing about the club being small is that I really can cater it completely to student interest,” she said.
The Spanish Club plans on doing a variety of interesting activities, and they currently vibe to Spanish music after school to relax after a long day. Mrs. Karabell said, “One idea was finding a TV show in Spanish; we would watch an episode in the club, then students would watch a few episodes at home, and then we’d talk about them when we got together again.”
When asked if she teaches the students in the club about the cultures of different Spanish-speaking countries, Mrs. Karabell said, “I am open to teaching students whatever they are interested in, so we can definitely learn about Spanish-speaking countries. Culture can mean so many different things, but we can follow student interest (e.g. food, music, fashion, school/family life, etc.) to learn about a particular Spanish-speaking country or region.”
Junior Amy Rogers is excited about the Spanish Club, since Spanish is her favorite subject.
“I want to continue learning the language and the culture,” Amy said. She saw the club as a place where she could practice speaking Spanish and “enjoy expanding my knowledge.”
“Last year I wished Woodlynde had a Spanish club, and it seems my wish has been granted,” Amy said. “I am excited for what is to come. I hope that in the future, more Upper School kids will take an interest.”
