You may know Mr. Smith as a humorous, outgoing history teacher, but did you also know he wrote a paper for his master’s degree that was accepted into the Library of Congress?

“I was very excited and felt that all my hard work was validated,” said Mr. Smith, who earned his Master of Arts in History from Southern New Hampshire University. Mr. Smith discovered his major accomplishment when he received an email confirming that his paper was accepted to the Library of Congress.

The paper is titled, “Theodore Roosevelt and the Native Americans - How his beliefs influenced his treatment of the Native Americans,” said Mr. Smith.

More specifically, Mr. Smith said, “It discussed how [President Roosevelt’s] upbringing and education taught him eugenics, which led to his belief that if Native Americans didn’t assimilate and become ‘American’, then they were left behind and considered to be too primitive to be part of American culture and should stay on reservations.”

In addition, Mr. Smith’s paper also addressed, “Mostly how [Roosevelt] did not like that Native Americans would not accept the ability to own land. While he still felt that he should take care of those on reservations, as they needed to be taken care of because they were [considered to be] ‘primitive or lower humans.’ ”
