College Spotlight: Davis and Elkins College

Tucked away in the rural mountains of West Virginia lies a cozy, supportive college by the name of Davis and Elkins.  Davis and Elkins' mission is to create a nurturing environment where students are challenged to communicate effectively; think critically, creatively, and independently; prepare to live lives of perspective and meaning, and act responsibly as citizens of multiple communities. Truly devoted to the holistic development of the student, Davis and Elkins is a wonderfully supportive college that prioritizes academic support for all students and offers a wide variety of academic interventions that help students ease the transition from high school to college and expand upon their academic organization and preparation skills.

With an undergraduate enrollment of around 1,000, the small population does not denote the wide array of opportunities that are available to the students.  With majors ranging from nursing to sustainability studies to finance, Davis and Elkins offers a robust assortment of academic majors for a student to choose.  Furthermore, the college has a wealth of clubs and social opportunities, including the Outdoor Adventure Club and Paintball Club.

Davis and Elkins College is also home to the CONNECT Program, a year long post-graduate, pre-college academic preparation program that prepares students for the rigor of college academics as well as the independence and maturity needed to succeed on a college campus.  This comprehensive program moves far beyond federally mandated accommodations by taking a holistic approach to the development of these students. The program includes regular, weekly one-hour sessions with a supported learning program instructor. During these weekly meetings, strategies for time management, organizational skills, learning strategies, and various study skills strategies are learned, implemented, and monitored. Specialized technology, along with specialized assistance, provides students with support for success in academics, social interaction and independent living skills.

Whether you are at the beginning, middle, or end of your college search, do not overlook this great college and all of the wonderful opportunities it could offer for your student’s future.  Although it is certainly a far drive, proximity does not guarantee success when it comes to college academics.  So while you are on your college search, make a little time for Davis and Elkins, and experience for yourself all that is has to offer.
