In recent years, cosplay has become more prevalent in society among the younger generation. Cosplay is the act of dressing up as a movie, video game, or comic book character.

Senior
Kira Masalaitis has been engaging in cosplay for over five years and said she has participated in over 50 conventions with her friends. At cosplay conventions, participants walk around and meet others who have dressed up, take pictures, and have loads of fun.

Over the past five years, Kira’s love for cosplay has only grown. “I enjoy it so much because of many different reasons,” she said.

“I really love the creative aspect of cosplay. I make a lot of my cosplays and even if I buy one, I will still do some alterations.”

Kira has made many friends through cosplay events. On occasion, Kira and her friends will take part in events together.

“I love it because the community is so open and accepting of everyone. The cosplay community is very diverse in terms of race, age, gender, and sexual orientation, and ... I think that that is what makes the community so open to anyone or anything.”

Kira will typically dress up as her favorite Disney characters, such as Snow White, Peter Pan and Ariel. She has also dressed up as Princess Leia from
Star Wars and Barb from Stranger Things.

For the most part, Kira makes her own costumes, but in certain situations she will purchase one. Kira estimates she has probably spent more than $1,500 over the past five years.

“The most that I’ve spent on one cosplay was probably $200 and it was my Te Fiti,” the goddess from the movie
Moana.

Kira became interested in cosplay when a friend from school introduced her to a webcomic called
Homestuck.

“We cosplayed as some of the characters from there for the first couple conventions we went to together,” Kira said. “But then we started getting into other things and cosplaying as other things. And we’ve been cosplaying together since.”
