On November 12th, the unthinkable happened: Stan Lee, the icon of Marvel Comics and father of American superhero mythology, passed away.
For years, Marvel Comics has influenced me to be the best person I could be. The Fantastic Four taught me the importance of family and the X-Men helped me to find strength during difficult times. I even learned from the Hulk that anger can be used as a tool to accomplish unbelievable feats.
Spider-Man, who is the most inspirational hero in my eyes, was the reason I was able to shed my fear of heights when I first started rock climbing. He also allowed me to believe that the smallest things you do for people can make a huge impact.
Stan Lee co-created many of Marvel’s most popular characters. His universe helped me to learn right from wrong and that making the right choice always pays off.
I’m not the only one affected by the loss of Stan Lee.
SeniorSkylar Reiner was in shock when she heard the news of Stan Lee’s death. She looked up to him because, “He created a universe I know and love, and inspired me to do better and be creative.”
Skylar’s favorite Stan Lee creation is Iron Man because he was the character who piqued her interest in Marvel.
When he initially found out about Stan Lee’s passing, juniorWayne Ireland said, “I was in shock. It was also depressing.”
Wayne’s favorite Marvel character is Spider-Man, as the original Spider-Man movies withTobey Maguire were his childhood.
Physical education teacherMr. Mitchell grew up reading Spider-Man comics and drawing superheroes. His favorite superhero is also Spider-Man because he is unique and helps people with their everyday problems rather than constantly saving the world.
SeniorEthan Melniczek saidStan Lee was like a father figure to him in the sense that his morals were instilled by Stan’s heroic creations.
While it is sad to see Stan Lee go, it is comforting to know that he has joined his fellow legends, such asJim Henson, Bob Ross, and Mister Rogers.
In the immortal words of Stan ‘The Man’ Lee:
“Excelsior, True Believers!”
