Specific Learning Disability
Specific Learning Disability – the educational classification under the federal education law Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA, 2004) indicating that a student was not achieving adequately for their age or not meeting state-approved grade level standards in the area of Oral Expression, Listening Comprehension, Basic Reading Skills, Reading Fluency, Reading Comprehension, Written Expression, Math Calculation, and/or Math Problem Solving. This determination was made through either a discrepancy between the student’s cognitive abilities and achievement, through a pattern of strengths and weaknesses, or through a failure to Respond to Instruction and Interventions (RtI).
