Alumni Spotlight: Sarah Engman '12

An Internship Dream at Disney World
Sarah Engman ’12 just graduated from college and already has big plans. This fall, she will be moving to the place where many dreams come true – Walt Disney World – where she will join the Disney Internship Program. We recently caught up with Sarah where she talked about how Woodlynde helped her land this dream internship.

What was school like for you before you came to Woodlynde?
I entered Woodlynde in 3rd grade. I came in with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in my academic abilities due to my dyslexia. After just the first day at Woodlynde, I saw a major difference in myself and started to believe that it was possible for me to succeed in the classroom.

Where did you attend college and what is your degree?
I graduated in May from Widener University with a bachelor’s degree in communication with a concentration in graphic design.

What was the process of getting accepted in to the Disney Internship Program?
I almost didn’t apply for the program, because I didn’t think my chances of getting accepted were very good. Out of 50,000 students that apply to the program, only a few thousand are accepted. In order to be considered, I had to complete three steps. First, I submitted a basic application about my education, work experience, and previous internships. After this initial step, I was accepted to the next round of the process where I answered many questions relating to my personality and how I would potentially interact with guests. The final step was a phone interview with a Disney recruiter. To my delight, I was accepted in the first wave of acceptances and was the second photo pass photographer to be selected in my program.

What will you be doing as a Disney intern?
As an intern, I get to become part of the magic that is known worldwide. I will get valuable on-the-job experience in the parks and resorts, and I will expand my knowledge in the classroom with students from all over the world. I personally will be working in the Magic Kingdom as a photo pass photographer while living in campus housing.

How do you hope the program will help you with your career?
This program is a stepping stone for many different opportunities in the workforce. If I really enjoy my time in the internship program at Disney, I can apply for the Disney Professional Internship, an opportunity that typically leads to full-time employment with the Walt Disney World organization.

What do you think the long-term value of a Woodlynde education has been for you?
I know for a fact that I would not be in the position I am today without Woodlynde. Woodlynde helped me gain both the tools and self-confidence to succeed not just in school, but also in life.

What advice would you give to other alumni seeking internships?
A wise man named Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”
