Alumni Spotlight: Alex Rossi '11

Perseverance Pays Off in the Job Search
Alex Rossi ’11 currently works at Rosemont College, but his road to employment after college wasn’t an easy one. We caught up with Alex as he gives advice to fellow alumni on how to use skills learned at Woodlynde to help you find the career you want.

Everyone at Woodlynde has their own learning styles based on the concepts presented to them and the way that they process information. My struggle was reading comprehension. I was very literal with what I read and didn’t interpret the text due to a weakness in critical thinking skills. When my Woodlynde teachers noticed I was having problems with this, they thought it best to provide a tutor to read the text separately to me. This one-on-one assistance allowed me the opportunity to better understand what I was reading and increase my comprehension skills.

I think the long-term value of a Woodlynde education, besides the amazing academic experience, was how it got me comfortable meeting new people, building relationships with those people, and being a hard worker every day. As I progressed into high school, I was no longer afraid to ask for extra help. Woodlynde showed me that self-advocacy is the best approach, and the faculty guided me in developing the study skills and the confidence that I need to advance in school and life.

Those skills were especially useful during my recent job search. I graduated from King’s College in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. I knew that I wanted a job where I would help people and be able to put my interest in helping people and interpersonal skills to good use. For most recent college graduates, finding your first job isn’t an easy process. It requires a lot of hard work, effort, and networking – and Woodlynde prepared me well for it all.

Now, I am working at Rosemont College as a billing coordinator. I attribute my current job to the diligence that I put into my job search. To my fellow Woodlynde alumni searching for jobs, I advise you to get as many applications, phone calls, and networking events in as possible. Network with those you already know through friends and LinkedIn. Secure information interviews with people working related fields. Keep up the hard work, and you will find something. I did.
