For many students, traveling to foreign countries is something they do not get to experience very often. When it comes to sophomore Zach Hurwitz, however, venturing out of the U.S. is something he’s done quite a lot.

Zach loves to travel, and he has visited 23 different countries, with his 24th country coming in February when he leaves for India. He is very excited about his upcoming trip to the eastern Asian country.

“I’m excited to go to India because the culture is so different and I get to see amazing landmarks and meet new people,” he said recently.

Out of every location he has been to, Zach said his favorites are Israel, Japan, Italy, St. Thomas, and The Cayman Islands, “because each country has unique attractions such as buildings, beaches, food, art, history, and more.”

Zach has traveled with both friends and family around the world, on airplanes and on seven cruises.

“Over the summer, I sailed aboard the Allure of the Seas,” Zach said, naming the trip as one of his favorite travel experiences. “The Allure at the time was the world's largest cruise ship. The ship weighs 225,282 gross tons and holds 7,148 passengers and 2,384 crew members,” he said.

While he doesn’t have a favorite country, some of the highlights included a trip to Israel, where he experienced “floating in the Dead Sea, visiting the Western Wall, going to Masada, Tel Aviv, going to the Lebanon and Israeli border… 36 miles away from the headquarters of ISIS.”

Zach also spent two weeks in Japan with an organization called “People to People.” They visited the many wonders of Japan, such as the famous city of Hiroshima. “We took a bullet train to Hiroshima, where we visited another governor's mansion, the A-bomb dome, the WWII memorial, and we made paper cranes that represented world peace.”

Traveling has benefitted Zach in many different ways.

“I realize how lucky I am to be living the life that I have, understanding issues around the world. I get to see the different types of cultures, try different foods, and experience local activities.”

When asked what country he most wants to visit next, Zach replied: “I would really like to go to London, England, because the city is so historic, modern, and interesting.”
