When Mrs. Schiefer taught writing at Woodlynde, her classroom was filled with bizarre and unusual items, including tape recorders, typewriters, and old wooden toys that students loved playing with.

“Most of my items have been obtained at local auctions, yard sales and estate sales,” Mrs. Schiefer said in an email interview with TheInformer. “I love collecting items that aren't available in stores any longer, or which spark a memory from years gone by.”

Mrs. Schiefer was a longtime Middle and Upper School writing teacher who was loved by most of her students. She started at Woodlynde in 1991 and retired in 2015.

In October, Mrs. Schiefer took all the bizarre and unusual items that filled her classroom and put them to good use. She opened up a shop where she rents her possessions to photo ops, commercials and parties in Hollywood, California.

She came up with the idea for the prop store because of her son. “He’s out working in Hollywood,” Mrs. Schiefer said. “He recognized that a lot of the stuff I had would be popular in movies and TV."

Shoppers can either go on her website or visit her warehouse in North Hollywood.

When asked what kind of props are in her store, Mrs. Schiefer replied, “Everything that's old from the East Coast. Old typewriters, farm equipment, buckets, tools; mid-century stuff like lamps and rocking chairs. Basically, anything that represents something that's old or country. And that’s why we call the shop ‘Old N Country’.”

After only being open for a week, Mrs. Schiefer's props were already in a commercial and rented out for different parties.

“The very first order I filled was for a movie shoot,” Mrs. Schiefer said. “It was very exciting to see others see my antiques as being ‘cool, unusual items.’”

“It’s actually really impressive,” sophomore Kyle Pennypacker, who had Mrs. Schiefer for seventh grade writing, said about the props store. “It’s a different entrepreneurship idea. [It’s] inspirational to do more businesses like that.”
